AGO PROGRAMS

(go to COMMUNITY EVENTS)

American Guild of Organists
Western North Carolina Chapter
2009-2010 Program Year

The coming year promises to be filled with great music, great collaborations, and great colleagues. We are reaching into the community with collaborative and educational programs while leaving room for the get-togethers that keep us checked in with each other. We hope you'll be able to be present at all these events.

Don't forget to check our website (www.wnc-ago.org) for details as well as updates, plus other musical events and news of interest to our chapter.

PROGRAMS AND EVENTS FOR 2009-2010

Saturday, September 12, 2009: Cookout at Lake Julian

We opened our 2009-10 season with a cookout at Lake Julian, provided the Burgers and Hot Dogs, the buns, drinks, condiments, plates, and flatware; and you brought Macaroni Salad, Baked Vegetable & Fruit, Chocolate Chip Cookies and an Apple Pie. We met our old friends, made some new ones, caught up on events we hosted over the summer and found out what's happening now. We discussed what we have planned for the Chapter and for your own churches.

Saturday, November 14, 2009, 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM: To Be Announced: Pedals, Pipes, and Pizza

First United Methodist Church, Brevard, in partnership with the Asheville Area Piano Forum and your Chapter, will present for the first time, this well-known outreach program developed by the national AGO. Working with regional piano teachers and arts organizations, we are offering this introduction to the organ and its music to area middle school pianists. A day of organ music, demonstrations, questions and answers, fun food, and more - this is an important undertaking for us and is something we are very excited about. First UMC in Brevard, with lots of space and two pipe organs, will host this event. We'll need lots of volunteers, so be on the lookout for ways you might help us.

Tuesday, January 5, 2010: Twelfth Night Party

No drummers drumming, just organists recovering from the holidays. Back by popular demand, this will be a great way to unwind from the season's busy-ness. Jim Crawford will host our gathering at his home. Directions to his address will be provided by email prior to the event, for his security. Bring a twelfth-night treat, holiday leftover goodies, or whatever you wish.

Sunday, March 14, 2010, 4:00 PM: Liturgical Drama and Organ Music for Lent

Presented at the Cathedral of All Souls, Asheville, in partnership with Friends of the Groom, this collaborative event will be a unique one for your Chapter and this area. We will host a performance by the liturgical drama troupe, Friends of the Groom. These remarkable artists offer striking and fresh storytelling, enactments, and tableaux in partnership with scripture, music, and actors drawn from our local churches and communities. Members of the Chapter will play great organ music for the Lent season as these dramatic scenes and stagings are brought to life. This is truly not-to-be-missed and is open to the public.

Sunday, May 2, 2010, 4:00 PM: Hymn Festival

For our final program, we will gather at First Presbyterian Church, Asheville for a Hymn Festival that not only concludes our AGO year but also will help begin the first local chapter in this country of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. The apt name "Southern Appalachian Chapter" will shape this Hymn Festival as we draw on writers, composers, and church music histories of our region. A festival choir will be assembled to help lead music – but your voices and the voices of your friends, choir members, church members, and anyone else you think of will be the main choir! Hymn Society President and Brevard College Professor Mary Louise Bringle will help coordinate this event.
